You have already decided you want a custom painting, now what? Here are some things to consider when commissioning an artist for a custom work of art:
1. How big do you want the painting to be?
If you have a very specific spot for the art that requires a custom size, make sure to double check your measurements and provide these dimensions to the artist. Keep in mind that custom sizes will likely require custom framing, whereas a standard size will make it easy for you to find a ready-made frame and save on framing costs. The chart below shows you popular standard sizes to choose from. If you are not sure whether the size you need is standard or not, ask the artist.
2. What kind of paint do you like?
If your artwork is going to be kept indoors (and safe from the elements) there's no right or wrong type of paint - it's just a matter of preference. While there are many other options available, below are 3 of the most popular types of paints.
Oil paint is really rich and glossy. A lot of people like it because it's what the masters used and so it is very traditional. It is more commonly used on canvas but it can be applied to other surfaces like art boards or wood.
Acrylic paint is great because its drying time is much faster than oil, so it is good for tight deadlines. This water based, fast drying paint can be applied to just about any surface, wood, canvas, walls, fabric, even shoes.
Watercolor paint is also equally beautiful but a little more restricting in that it is best used on paper, and then must be protected in a frame with glass over the art.

3. What style of art do you like?
Are you looking for something abstract, realistic, playful, serious, colorful, black & white, illustrative, conceptual, something else? I know, lots to consider! Worry not, this part is easy too. Start off with a photo of what you are looking to have painted and talk to the artist about what you like. Try to be as clear as possible and if he/she is unable to do it because its not their style, odds are he/she will have a fellow artist friend to refer you to.
4. What's your budget?
Keep in mind that you get what you pay for and if this custom art is important to you, it may be worth investing a little more to get exactly what you want in the size you want. Talk to the artist if you are working with a budget so that you can come up with a solution that works for both of you.
